NAY PYI TAW – The flood in Nay Pyi Taw resulting from heavy rains has resulted in the death of 6 men and 13 women, a total of 19, and the number of death is expected to rise, according to announcements by the fire department and reports from local people.
It is said that the fire department reduced a total of 3,602 people from the villages in the townships of Nay Pyi Taw including Tatkone Township, Zeyarthiri Township, Povvathiri Township and Lelway Township and the initial reports by the fire department mentioned that a total of 19 people, 6 men and 13 women, have died.
As of 8:20 p.m. on September 12, the fire department is reported to have evacuated 3,602 people affected by the flood from 30 locations: 150 people from Magyipin, Tatkone Township; 129 from Ywathit Village and Anawyahtar Ward; 12 from Watinn Village, Nayyaungpyainn and Baekone Village of Povvathiri Township; 705 from Ayemyinttharyar, Satkone Village, Tanposu Village, Chaungsauk Village and Pauktaw Village; 24 from Maupin Village in Pyinmana Township; 651 from Pyinmana sugar mill, monastery, Nyaungpintha Village, Thanatshae Village and Kyunoo Village; 399 from Watkone and Pauktaw Village; 20 from Taukhtain Village, Povvathiri; 18 from Kintha fork and Pinlaung intersection; 57 from Ywathit Village; 30 from Bayintnaung Ward and nursing home; 482 from Magyipin Village; 258 from Magyipin Village Tract and Nyaungpintha Village; 447 from the villages of Kyeephyyoe, Sinthay, Zaykone, Hnantaw, Thitseintpin, Zeephypin, Natthuye and Pawsankhaw; 150 from Hayman Village and Thitsein Village in Lelway Township; and 70 from Khunchan Village.
“We found the dead bodies only after the water level fell. We don’t know their identities yet. As for the number of deaths, it is difficult to ascertain the exact number for now as there were villages that were entirely swept by the current. Some villages below Paunlaung Dam for example vanished completely. So, the number of death is only expected to rise further,” said a volunteer worker based in Nay Pyi Taw.
