MYANMAR – Due to the sudden rise of Thaung Yin River (Moei river) water level in Thai-Myanmar border, there were floods in Myawaddy, shore of Myawaddy and low-lying areas, according to local people.
Because of heavy rain since July 25, but Thaung Yin River water level has also risen, the flood situation become worse. Some relief camps have been opened in monastery and school to evacuate people for flood disaster in Myawaddy.
“As of 5:00 a.m., even the bed from the ground floor became sunk. Currently, the whole ground floor was sunk and we had transferred our belongings. Because of the continuous heavy rain, I think the flood will be continued,” said a local people from Myawaddy.
Furthermore, in the morning of 25 July, because of downhill erosion, the Naung Khwee bridge ramp from Myawaddy-Hto Kaw Koo-HpaAn highway has been totally destroyed and could not use the bridge anymore. That bridge is located in Paingkyon sub-township, Hpa-an district and Myawaddy-Hto Kaw Koo-HpaAn highway is no longer able to use.
Similarly, in Hpa-an, Salween River water level has reached about one and a half feet above the water mark and water has already entered the low-lying wards.
“Shore of Hpa-an looks like a sea. The road of the shore had been sunk. If the water level rises more than the current situation, Hpa-an downtown will also be flooded. The downpour continues. The people from lower wards had been evacuating,” said a local.
Because of continuous raining, Haung Tha Yaw River water level has risen and the wards from downtown of Kyaik Don are facing flood. The local people from Bilin are also evacuating due to river and spring water entering into the town.
