RAKHINE STATE – As the rain continued for over 20 days, the water level of Laymyo River and Kaladan River rose and flooded the lower parts of the Minbya-Mrauk U-Ponnagyun Road, causing travellers to be stuck.
It is said that the travellers have been stuck since August 2 and around 50 vehicles are stuck on the road, according to a passenger bus driver.
“We have been stuck here for two days, unable to cross. The water level fell today (August 4) but there are trees on the road. The water level is low enough for cars to drive but we can’t use the roads as there are trees and rafts on the road,” said the driver.
The vehicles currently stuck on the road are said to be India tricycles, motorcycles, passenger buses and cargo trucks.
“We came to summon an internal doctor for an emergency patient. Now we can’t move so are just stuck here. The water level fell now but it may rise again so it is not certain if we can move forward,” said a passenger.
The water level of Laymyo River fell in rural villages but the lower wards of Minbya and Mrauk U are still flooded. The vehicles are currently stuck near the villages of Paungtote, Nankya and Myaungbwe.
Similarly, the water level of Kaladan River flooded the road near Thayetthapin Village, Maharmuni Pagoda in Kyauktaw Township and traffic is stuck.
