MANDALAY DIVISION – Phyo Thandar Aung, the junta-appointed administration officer for Maygagiri Ward who has been forcibly recruiting soldiers for the junta council in Aungmyaytharzan Township, was shot dead alongside her sister, according to residents of Mandalay and junta lobbyist channels.
The ward administration officer and her sister were reportedly shot by some gunmen on bikes at the corner of 18th Street and 82nd Street in Maygagiri Ward, Aungmyaytharzan Township, at around 7:30 a.m. on August 6 and both died on the spot.
The Maygagiri Ward administration officer had gathered the people and checked household registrations not just in Maygagiri Ward but in the entire Aungmyaytharzan Township to forcibly conscript young people for the junta army. The township administration officer and the junta army were extremely fond of her. She was very proactive when conscripting soldiers for the junta council,” said a resident of Aungmyaytharzan Township.
Currently, the junta council is conducting inspections in Mandalay and Aungmyaytharzan Township and also checking the CCTV records near the site of the shooting, according to residents.
Due to the rumors that the revolutionary forces might be attacking Mandalay soon, junta forces have tightened security and set up hidden sentries and snipers at police stations, military bases as well as high-rise buildings in the city.
