MYANMAR – The drivers in Yangon reported that fuel prices jumped on August 16 but they still have to queue at gas stations and cannot buy as much as they need.
Cars queued at gas stations since August 15 night to be able to purchase fuel on August 16 and although the shops open at 6 a.m., each car is able to buy only between 30,000 and 50,000 kyats worth of fuel while the fuel prices soared.
“The price of 92 octane went up by 150 Kyats per litre. For 95 octane, it went up by 155 Kyats while diesel and premium diesel went up by 110 and 170 Kyats respectively. Now at the fast station, we can only buy maximum 50,000 Kyats. We can’t buy as much as we need. The price went up but the demand is still not met. The gas stations said that the situation will return to normal soon,” said a driver from Yangon.
The fuel prices on August 16 were 3,045 Kyats per litre for 95 Octane, 2,900 Kyats for 92 Octane, 2,560 Kyats for diesel and 3,115 Kyats for premium diesel.
The junta council announced that fuel tankers have arrived at Yangon Port and reassured that the fuel situation will improve while the junta central bank also announced that it will sell 100 million USD to the fuel businesses.
