BAGO DIVISION – Karen Emergency Relief Committee reported on August 17 that 19 people, including children, were killed and 54 were injured due to the heavy weapon attacks and airstrikes by the junta council in Mone Township, Bago Division in five months.
From April 1 to August 15, artillery fired by the junta council’s battalions, including Infantry Battalion 73 and Light Infantry Battalion 307, Shwewa Battalion, as well as aerial bombardments killed and injured residents.
“Many people were injured and killed mainly because of the heavy weapon. There were not that many casualties from the airstrikes. There is no battle. The heavy weapons are fired more than 10 rounds every day,” said the spokesperson of the Mone Township Karen Emergency Relief Committee.
Among the dead and injured due to aerial bombardment and the heavy weapon attacks of the junta council were residents of Nga Tokhin, Hsate Phyu, Thapyay Nyunt, Shwepyitha, Kyaukkyi Pauk and Aung Soe Moe Villages.
In addition, 206 houses in more than 20 villages in Mone township, including the villages mentioned above, were burned by the junta council columns, said the above spokesman.
At present, more than 10,000 local people (over 10,743) have been displaced and are living in other villages and forests away from harm. As it is currently the rainy season and the transport and emplyment situation is also bad, they need help with food and shelter.
From the time of the coup d’etat to August 16th, 2024, a total of 5,515 people died due to the military council and its lackeys, according to the Assistance Association for Political Prisoners – AAPP.
