SHAN STATE – The junta appointed administration team in Mingalar Aung Myay Ward of Shwenyaung in Taunggyi Township, southern Shan State is said to have told the residents to pay 30 million Kyats to cover the conscription demand.
Ward Administration Officer Tin Zaw and Hundred-household Chiefs Soe Oo, San San Aye and Tin Shwe reportedly threatened the residents that every household will have to draw lots for conscription if they don’t get five people to send to the army.
“San San Aye is even more active than the ward administration officer. Her husband, Khin Maung Soe, is a Non-CDM staff (who didn’t join the civil disobedience movement against the junta regime) and both her son and daughter-in-law are in the police force. She is the most intimidating one. She keeps scolding and threatening us,” said a source close to the ward administration office.
All men between 18 and 45 years will be eligible for conscription and the 30 million Kyats for replacement will not be collected by the administration team but has to be paid after it is gathered.
“The parents are sad. Three lakhs per household is a large amount at this time. The ward administration officer told them to call him when the full amount of cash is collected and that he will come and collect it then,” said a resident of Zone 3 of Mingalar Aung Myay Ward.
Although it is not yet clear how much each household will have to pay to gather 30 million, many residents of the ward are said to have either sold or pawned their belongings in order to afford it.
Similarly at Pinphyit Village in Yaksauk Township that’s close to Shwenyaung, Pa’O militia working for the junta council, Pa’O National Organisation (PNO) is reportedly conducting three-day military training and sending the trainees as reinforcement to Kyaukgu Village.
