YANGON DIVISION – Cooking oil, including peanut oil is running out in super markets of Yangon, the consumers said.
“There is a shortage of cooking oil,” said a salesperson at City mart supermarket.
Cooking oil is out of stock in shopping malls such as Ga Mone Pwint and Sein Gayhar shopping malls, as well as City mart.
“If the new stock of oil arrives, it runs out immediately even though we sell only two bottles per person,” said an employee of City mart.
At present, not only shopping malls, but also shops in the neighborhoods are also running out of oil stock, a resident of Kamayut Township said.
In addition, based on the type of oil, the price has gone up from 5,000 to 8,000 kyats per viss, he said.
After the dollar exchange price reached a record high, the prices of food items, including oil, also increased in the market, and dry goods such as instant noodles are also selling well in shopping centers.
“Now, the prices at City mart supermarkets are even cheaper than outside. For a packet of instant noodle with Tom Yum flavor, I have to pay a thousand in the neighborhood shop but City mart sells at 700 kyats” said a housewife.
In shopping malls, product prices change depending on the exchange rate, and some malls have put up notices limiting purchases to only up to two pieces for each item.
