SAGAING DIVISION – Locals reported that a child lost a leg and a woman was critically injured by junta heavy artillery attacks in Salingyi Township.
Around 1:15 p.m. on August 23, junta Nyaungpintha checkpoint in Monywa fired four 120mm shells into the villages on the western bank of Chindwin River.
Two of the weapons exploded in Phaungtaga Village and a Grade 6 student was hit in the thigh and had her leg amputated, said the information officer of Chindwin River Bank Villages Strike Committee.
In addition, a woman in her 40s was also reported to have been heavily injured.
“The child lost one of her legs. She was in Grade 6 so is probably 13 or 14 years old. Another victim had shrapnel penetrate her waist. She is in critical condition,” said the information officer of Chindwin River Bank Villages Strike Committee.
Several houses in Phaungtaga Village were also reportedly damaged by junta artillery attacks.
The junta forces in Monywa frequently shell the villages on the western bank without battle and a pregnant woman from Kuthokone Village had miscarried after getting hit by a heavy artillery attack on August 14.
