AYEYARWADDY DIVISION – 275 prisoners including 25 political prisoners were transferred from Pathein Prison to Myaungmya Prison, reported Mr. Taik Tun Oo from Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM).
The junta council transferred the prisoners on August 25 around 8 a.m. and the prisoners arrived at Myaungmya Prison around 2 p.m. It is said that there are plans to transfer more prisoners from Pathein Prison at the end of August.
Only around 25 of the transferred prisoners were political prisoners while the rest were criminal prisoners including those detained for crossing borders. Mr. Taik Tun Oo said that there are security concerns for all prisoners including political prisoners as the junta council is preparing for battles in Pathein.
“As the junta subordinate forces have been making more preparations for battles in Ayeyarwaddy Division, they are transferring the prisoners including political prisoners to more secured prisons. We need to pay more attention as there are news of more frequent prison transfer in the coming months,” said Mr. Taik Tun Oo.
