SAGAING DIVISION – According to data for Myanmar’s July report, an average of 71 civilian deaths and 66 civilian injuries per month due to violence in the Sagaing region in 2024.
Data for Myanmar has been calculated based on information collected from some local media and sources for the duration of January 1st to July 31st, 2024.
According to the report, 499 civilians died and 464 civilians were injured due to violence in Sagaing Division this year. Of the dead, 428 were killed by the junta council forces, and 20 by revolutionary armed forces. It has been reported separately that 9 people were killed by Pyu Saw Htee groups and 4 people were killed by Kuki forces.
As many as 38 people have been killed during the fighting, incidents involving civilians/criminal gangs and other unconfirmed perpetrators.
Among the civilian casualties 159, 21 percent, were women and children. It was learned that these were killed by heavy weapons, drone attacks, mines and airstrikes.
The increase in the number of civilian deaths in the Sagaing division is due to the lack of compliance with military ethics by the armed organizations, especially the junta council, indiscriminately attacking civilians and armed forces. According to Data for Myanmar, this is due to the lack of precautions to avoid the harming of civilians.
“Armed organizations are more responsible, and the people can do less to reduce civilian casualties,” Data for Myanmar said.
In Sagaing, the towns where civilian deaths are high are Kalay, Monywa, Shwe Bo, Myinmu, Tamu, and Minking townships.
