MYANMAR – Dr. Win Myint, the owner of Myatmyittarmon Gas Station Company and former MP from the junta-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) is leading the project to use smart cards to restrict the sale of fuel to vehicles, according to a source from the Myanmar fuel import and distribution group.
The junta council is importing USD billions worth of fuel yearly and is selling USD to the fuel importers at exchange rate lower than the market rate. And thus to reduce the fuel import, they plan to sell restricted amount of fuel using smart cards. Discussions and cooperations are currently ongoing between the junta council and the Myanmar fuel import and distribution group to implement the system and Dr. Win Myint who is also the secretary of the group is leading the project.
“The one leading the project for smart card to purchase fuel is the former USDP MP for Hlaing Township during 2010-2015, Dr. Win Myint. He is also the one who wants the project to be implemented. He previously made profits in a similar way so he’s been looking for similar opportunities. He is the main reason (behind the project),” said the above source.
Dr. Win Myint’s Myatmyittarmon (MMTM) also has close ties with the junta council and is importing fuel from Russia and jet fuel for the junta council as well. He is also said to have relations with Aung Pyae Sone, the son of junta dictator Min Aung Hlaing, in fuel import businesses.
The terrorist junta council is unable to sell USD at lower prices to the fuel importers and thus is planning to implement the smart card to purchase fuel in order to restrict the amount of fuel purchase.
Generally, the fuel demand in Myanmar is between 2 and 3 billion USD annually but the junta council is planning to make huge cuts to the fuel import to save up on USD which has led to frequent fuel shortages in the country.
