NAY PYI TAW – Due to the heavy rains and the releasing of water from the dam, the people of Tatkon Township, Nay Pyi Taw are facing a sudden flood and are trapped. The people in the area also said that there is an urgent need for rescue.
On September 11 morning, there was a sudden rise of water and flood due to the release of water from Mong Chaung Dam, heavy rain and mountain streams. Due to strong currents, cows from Lepangone Village were washed away. Currently, at least seven villages are in need of assistance, according to local people.
“There is a great flood in Lepangone Village in Magyi Kon Village Tract, Shaukkone Village and Aungmyay Village in Shaukkone Village Tract, at the junction of Mong River and Nawin River in Tatkon Township, Oattara Thiri District, Nay Pyi Taw, and there is an urgent need for evacuation. Many villages in Tatkon Township need help because the water level is too high. Currently, people are trapped in Shaukkone Village, Lepangone Village, Aungmyay Village, Ywathit Village, Nung Thinkha Villages, and Ywaysu Village. Mong Chaung Dam released the water without prior notice. The cows of Lepangone Village were gone with the water. Relief needs to be done in the villages of Lapangone, Aungmyay and Shaukkone which are immediately affected by the release of the dam and the rising water level,” said a ward/village volunteer leader from Lepangone Village.
Currently, houses are being washed away. The trapped people are living on the roofs of their houses and it is difficult to evacuate as the current is too strong.
“The main reason why the people are trapped in their houses is because there is no rescue efforts. There are mountains around the area, so the water is rushing down from the hill. Please come and rescue the villages of Shaukkone, Lepangone and Aungmyay,” said a local resident.
Similarly, villages and neighborhoods such as Anawyahta, Ywathit, Tada Oo, Naung Thit, Kyaung Su and Pyaing Inn of Tatkon Township, Nay Pyi Taw are under water and need rescue.
