SAGAING DIVISION – Local people reported that civilians in Kani Township are fleeing as nine junta ships sailing down the Chindwin River opened fire on the villages in the river bank.
On September 18 around 6 a.m., nine warships of the junta council that departed from the ports at Taungphyu Village and Pansat Village in Minkin Township opened fire on the villages on the river bank and the civilians from the villages had to flee as the ships entered Kani Township.
“Now the nine warships at arrived at the lower part of Thintaw Village in Minkin Township and are about to enter Kani Township. So the villages on the river bank are moving out. They need to flee in advance to be safe. Even now, they (junta ships) are firing at the villages as they come down. We have yet to receive any reports of civilian casualties,” said a resident of Michaungtwin Village in Kani Township.
The villages that had to flee from the bombardments from junta warships include villages such as Michaungtwin, Kinyin, Konetha, and Bommazin Villages in Kani Township. The nine junta ships are said to have sailed from Hommalin in the upper Chindwin River and are reportedly headed to Monywa Harbour.
