BAGO DIVISION – Sources close to Tharyarwaddy Prison revealed that the prison authorities did not punish the prisoner who attacked a female political prisoner with a sharpened iron stick.
In Cell No. 1 of Tharyarwaddy Prison, there was an argument between a prisoner and a female political prisoner, which resulted in the female political prisoner getting stabbed with an iron stick sharpened against the floor.
Ms. Chit Moe Swe (aka) Gawbihtoke, sentenced to 11 years in prison for drug use, reportedly attacked the female political prisoner after getting into an argument. It is said that she had gotten into frequent arguments with and attacked political prisoners, and this is the second time she attacked with a weapon.
However, a source close to the prison shared that Ms. Nan Tin, the officer in charge of the cell, did not punish her for her physical and verbal assaults.
Moreover, Officer Nan Tin is said to be accepting bribes and would manipulate prisoners with heavy sentences to carry out her orders in addition to oppressing the political prisoners. She is also reportedly entangled in financial problems due to her gambling habits and is known to demand cash from family members of the prisoners.
In addition, it is said that the prison authorities have threatened the prisoners to stay quiet about how the political prisoner was stabbed with an iron stick so that the news wouldn’t reach the revolutionary forces or be reported in the media.
