MYANMAR – At the 2024 ASEAN Summit in Vientiane, Laos that began on October 9, Thailand Prime Minister announced that a meeting of the ASEAN representatives will be held at Bangkok in December to decide on a new peace route for Myanmar.
However, the former Minister of Foreign Affairs for Thailand and board member of APHR, Kasit Piromya criticised that ASEAN, constantly conducting meetings centered on Nay Pyi Taw and Min Aung Hlaing, is only shamelessly creating paths for the junta council and stated that it is time to conduct discussions with the elected National Unity Government.
“ASEAN leaders are reluctant to speak to the democratic forces. It is such a shame that their unfair approaches are just creating paths that please Min Aung Hlaing. It is time to discuss with NUG,” he said.
Richard Hose, a senior consultant on Myanmar affairs for the international Crisis Group, also urged that it is also time for ASEAN to adapt and change as even China and India have adjusted their policies regarding Myanmar after revolutionary forces and EAOs have seized control of the borders and a considerable number of towns.
