BAGO DIVISION – Mr. Htay Aung Kyaw, a political prisoner detained in Tharyarwaddy Prison passed away after failing to receive medical treatment in time, reported Mr. Thaik Tun Oo from Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM).
Mr. Htay Aung Kyaw, who was sentenced to 15 years in prison by the terrorist junta council under sections 51(c) and 50(j) of the terrorism act, is said to have passed away on October 13 at Tharyarwaddy Prison after the prison authorities permitted his transfer only at his last moments.
“The funeral for Mr. Htay Aung Kyaw is not finished yet. The political prisoners are proving with their lives that there is inadequate healthcare in the prisons. As long as the junta prison authorities do not meet our demands for sufficient healthcare in prison, there will continue to be loss of lives in prisons,” said Mr. Thaik Tun Oo.
Mr. Htay Aung Kyaw was transferred to Tharyarwaddy Prison from Kyaikmaraw Prison. He had suffered from internal injuries that spread to his liver after being subjected to physical assault and solitary confinement following the transfer but was not allowed to receive treatment and passed away as a result.
