MANDALAY DIVISION – In Myitthar Township, 27 year old Mr. Ko Ko Gyi from Yoekan Village and three more young men from Yitkan Village were abducted by the terrorist junta council to be conscripted. Acquaintances of the victims informed that they are being detained at the general administration office in Myitthar and their families were told to pay five million Kyats for their release.
The four young men were reportedly abducted at a junta checkpoint on November 2 evening. They are said to be from poor households. Mr. Ko Ko Gyi, in particular, was the breadwinner of his family, doing odd jobs and thus his family is unable to afford the ransom for his release. The situation of the three young men abducted from Yitkan Village is also not known yet.
A friend of the abducted victims shared that the junta forces “abducted the young men while conducting checks at the gate in Yitkan Village. Three young men from Yitkan Village were taken. They are demanding four to five million Kyats for their release. The young men were reported abducted to be conscripted. Over two months ago, a young man from Yoekan Village was abducted. He can no longer be exchanged for ransom money.”
Starting early November, there have been frequent abduction of young people for conscription by junta army and administration teams in the townships of Mandalay Division including Myitthar, Tada U and Amarapura Townships. They would abduct people at the checkpoints on the roads and also when checking household registrations at homes.
