SHAN STATE – In Ayetharyar of Taunggyi Township, junta policeman Htet Ko Nyein is reportedly tricking young people into military conscription after luring them with jobs and vacations and at least 20 people have been forcibly conscripted in that way, according to the families of some of the victims.
Htet Ko Nyein, a junta policeman from the police sub division of No. 35 security division in Meikhtila, reportedly arrived in Ayetharyar, Taunggyi and lured young people with promises of jobs and vacations then conscript them and send them to Nay Pyi Taw military recruitment battalion. It is said that he would first act friendly and gain the trust of the young people then conscripts around six people per month and send them to the military in Nay Pyi Taw and other cities after promising to find them jobs in the cities.
“Policeman Htet Ko Nyein is staying in Ayetharyar. He would build a relationship with the young people there. He’s been here for months. He would get the young people conscripted after promising them jobs or vacations. They are sent to Nay Pyi Taw. He would conscript at least six people each month,” said the mother of a young man who was tricked into military conscription.
Moreover, as it has become difficult to draft soldiers for the junta council in Taunggyi, the township general administration team has reportedly ordered the ward and village administration teams to draft young people for the batch 8 – 10 of conscription and to immediately send them off for military training once required.
Myo Win, the administration officer for Yayayekwin Ward in Taunggyi is reported to have drafted young people for the current batch 8 as well as batch 9 and batch 10 of military conscription on December 14.
“There are also frequent reports of people abducted for conscription in Taunggyi due to the lack of people. Many young people were abducted in Ayetharyar as well. They were abducted when they went out at night,” said a resident of Taunggyi.
