SAGAING DIVISION – Mr. Taik Tun Oo, an executive committee member of Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) reported that the prisoners unjustly detained inside the cells in Monywa Police Station were not provided enough living space or healthy food.
The Station Chief Pyae Lin Aung and Guard Clerk Chit Nyo Nyo are known to target and bully those detained under political charges, cursing them, stealing the cash and items sent from their families and abusing and exploiting them, every day.
Moreover, PPNM said that around 200 detainees, including those under political charges, are currently crammed inside the cell that is only around 30′ by 40′.
“In those cells where there are at least 150 people, they would deliver food in small bags. But only around 100 bags are delivered when there are at least 150 people. It is not enough for everyone. They have also been feeding them tomato curry only. People who can afford the money have to pay 200,000 to 300,000 per month to buy meals sold by the police and prison family members so that their health won’t deteriorate. Even people who have been sentenced are still detained in those cells. There is Monywa Prison. They should be transferred there but are still crammed inside the police cells just so the police family members can earn money,” explained Mr. Taik Tun Oo.
He continued that a large number of prisoners, including political prisoners, enough to place in a prison cell building, are crammed inside the police cell and explained that the junta forces plan to use those prisoners as human shields in case of attacks and to exploit them for money.
“The revolutionary forces active in Monywa Township need to be aware of these actions. The police forces, station chiefs and guard clerks there are horrible people abusing the political prisoners. There is a need to warn them and reign them in. We do not accept this and condemn them,” said Mr. Taik Tun Oo.
