RAKHINE STATE – The Arakan Army (AA) reported that Colonel Aung Nay Myo, the commander of junta infantry division 22, who fled from Border Guard Battalion 5 in Maungtaw Township was captured dead with 80 million Kyats in cash and several gold bars and jewelry.
The junta colonel that ran away from border guard battalion 5 without surrendering was reportedly captured dead in a prawn farming hut near Shwezar Kappakaung Stream in Maungtaw Township on December 17 noon. It is said that he died after stepping on a landmine while trying to flee into Bangladesh with the help of junta affiliated Muslim rebels.
AA defeated and captured border guard battalion 5, the last junta base in Maungtaw at 9:30 a.m. on December 8 and Colonel Aung Nay Myo was among the junta forces that fled without surrendering when that base fell. Meanwhile, Brigadier General Thurein Tun, the commander of Butheetaung based Military Operations Command 15, and team were captured alive to the west of Shwetaung Village in Maungtaw on December 8 evening.
Colonel Aung Nay Myo tried to escape into Bangladesh with the help of junta subordinate Muslim armed forces but didn’t get a chance to escape under the scrutiny of AA security and coast guard forces, and eventually died from loss of blood after stepping on a landmine.
Colonel Aung Nay Myo was a graduate of DSA batch 41. He was deployed to Maungtaw Township while serving as the commander of infantry division 22 based in Hpa-an Township, Karen State and was rewarded the good service medal by terrorist junta chief Min Aung Hlaing on January 4, 2024. He was in his 50s at the time of his death.
