YANGON DIVISION- A grade-nine student who uploaded a video file of swearing and sticking the coup leader’s photo on his shoe on social media was arrested by the military council.
Maung Phyo Myat Aung, a grade-9 student at Basic Education High School (2), Shwepyithar township, was arrested by the military council on November 27.
“That student is a bright. He posted a video on TikTok swearing and sticking the coup leader’s photo on his shoes. The military group tracked him down and arrested him. They are threatening the parents and classmates of the student,” said a resident of Shwepyithar.
The video file in which the above student stuck the coup leader’s photo to his shoe and cursed at him was posted on TikTok on the morning of November 27. Junta’s propaganda social media accounts called for his arrest and circulated the news, and he got arrested on the same day.
It is reported that the 14-year-old student has been arrested under Section 505-A, which allows arrest without a warrant, and could not bailed out. Some people criticize the cooperation of the school for his arrest.
“Non-CDM employees joined and obeyed the junta’s order. The rest of the children in the class were also frightened (as their classmate got arrested at school),” said a resident of Shwepyithar.
The military council has been relentless in suppressing those who oppose them since the coup.
Under-age were also arrested and many youths were killed by the junta troops during the crackdown of public strikes against the military dictatorship.
Since the coup, internet freedom has declined badly and internet cut-off has worsened. According to Freedom House’s survey of 72 countries, Myanmar and China were jointly ranked as the worst countries in the world for internet freedom in 2024.
