TANINTHARYI DIVISION – The Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM) announced that a political prisoner in Dawei Prison passed away due to not receiving sufficient healthcare, becoming the 15th death of a political prisoner this year.
62 year old political prisoner Mr. Ye Aung (aka) Ko Chin who was imprisoned under sections 50(j) and 52 reportedly passed away on October 17 at Dawei Hospital.
He had suffered from a stroke in the prison on September 27 and was sent outside to receive treatment due to insufficient medical doctors in prison and passed away in the midst of treatment, informed PPNM.
As such, the number of people dying due to insufficient health care in prisons in 2024 has reached 15, stated PPNM.
“The insufficient health care in prison was well noted at the time he suffered from stroke. Even worse human rights violations are observed in smaller prisons,” said Mr. Taik Tun Oo from PPNM.
PPNM also informed that it is still trying to confirm the exact circumstances behind the death.
