SHAN STATE – Local residents said that those people died in Kalaw Town due to flood and landslides included people fleeing war from Karenni (Kayah) State.
“Those displaced people fleeing the war have to rent in cheap places. Since those places were flooded badly, there are deaths,” said a local man (60) from Kalaw.
Due to the downpour in Kalaw Town, the water had risen up in lower ground areas such as Ward 2, 3, and 4, starting from September 10 and water level even risen over some houses.
Locals estimate that there could be hundreds of deaths in the flood, and some people are still missing.
“Many displaced people died in Inntein region as well. Some houses were gone in landslides and whole family died,” said a war displaced person from Loikaw Town.
A person helping in the rescue said that it is not possible to know the exact number of deaths because no exact list has been collected for the displaced.
