MYANMAR – It was reported that the terrorist junta regime carried out 174 attacks that destroyed schools and universities during more than 3-year of military coup, according to the report of the Myanmar Witness of the Center for Information Resilience (CIR).
From 1 February 2021 to 30 April 2024, there were 174 attacks that damaged schools and universities. During this period, school buildings were destroyed and devastated by atrocious junta’s airstrike, artillery, offensive and arson attacks.
The junta’s air forces carried out airstrike attacks on schools and universities the most and caused the most damage. At least 133 schools in Myanmar were destroyed. During these attacks, 64 people were killed and 106 people were injured.
Matt Lawrence, project director of Myanmar Witness, said: “The ongoing conflict in Myanmar has had devastating consequences, leaving thousands of civilians permanently displaced from their homes. The consequences of such attacks have deprived the affected generations of their hope for education. This investigation reflects only a fraction of what has happened, and the reality is that the damage and disruption to education is far beyond what Open Source can describe.”
It was reported that Schools in Sagaing Division were the most affected, accounting for about a third of all cases in the country.
Schools are protected by international law, but they are not protected in practice. The damage to schools continues to increase, the report said.
