MYANMAR- The number of political prisoners who died due to lack of access to adequate medical treatment in prisons has reached eighteen by November of this year, according to the Political Prisoners Network Myanmar (PPNM).
This list is from January to November 25th, and 16 men and 2 women, a total of 18 people died due to inadequate medical treatment in prisons.
The deaths are among those inmates in Obo, Diaik-U, Tharawati, Kyaikmaraw, Magwe, Thayet, Kalay, Pyay, Dawei and Myingyan Prisons.
At least one political prisoner died each month due to the lack of adequate health care in prison.
Inmates who died were not only due to inadequate medical treatment but also were not being treated for injuries sustained during interrogations or beatings by prison staff.
Mandalay Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, Union Minister of Electricity and Energy Mr. Win Khaing, and veteran politician Mr. Sein Lin recently passed away after not getting proper medical care in prisons.
In 2023, 15 political detainees and two other inmates, a total of 17 people died in prison for not getting proper medical care in prison.
