KACHIN STATE – According to local residents, a man who was crossing the highway on a motorcycle during a battle between the junta council and KIA near Karmai, Hpakant Township, was shot dead.
On July 12 at around 10:00 a.m., a local resident of Karmai who was passing by on a motorcycle during the one-hour-long battle between junta forces and KIA was hit by a bullet and died during a battle between the junta’s army and KIA at the Imbro intersection on the Karmai-Lawaw Road.
“They have been fighting each other for about 1 hour this morning (July 12). At that time, a citizen from Karmai came on a motorcycle and passed by during the battle, and was hit by a weapon and died,” he said.
It is known that the person who died after being hit by a bullet was Ms. Sein Ma’s husband, Mr. Kyaw Swe Oo, who is over 50-year-old, from Zi Kyun Ward in Karmai Town. It is also said that even after the battle ended, the junta army from Karmai shot ten rounds of heavy weapons.
After the coup d’état, the junta army stationed at the entrance gate of Karmai was attacked by the defence forces once in July 2021, and in March 2023, there was an incident where the junta forces shot and killed a truck driver who was going up from Moe Kaung to Hpakant.
Karmai is a township on the main road between Moe Kaung and Hpakant. Since after the coup, fighting between the junta council and KIA forces is still going on, and the army frequently abducts civilians from some villages in Karmai Township as human shields.
