YANGON DIVISION – The junta council has reportedly been extorting money from the families whose family members are working abroad in the villages of Kawhmu Township, and those families have to pay regularly to the junta soldiers, police, and junta-backed militias.
“The junta soldiers stationed in the villages of Kawhmu Township extorted money from the locals. They checked the housing census at first and begged for money from the households that had family members abroad. Those working in Thailand have to pay 30,000 Myanmar kyats; those in Malaysia have to pay 50,000 kyats; and those in Korea and Singapore have to pay 100,000 kyats monthly. The junta soldiers threatened the villagers that if they didn’t receive the said amount, they were going to sue the people,” said a local of Kawhmu.
Currently, the junta forces are stationed in Htanmanaing Village beside Yangon-Kawhmu-Dala Road and War Balock Village and ambushed along the road. Also, the junta soldiers forced the villagers to keep watch or pressured the people who couldn’t guard to pay for and hire night watchers. In addition, it was said that they threatened some youths in some villages and forced them to be trained as junta-backed militias (pyu saw htee). The villagers were also beaten up by the junta soldiers, according to a local of Kawhmu.
Kawhmu Township is the constituency of public leader Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi and the people of Kawhmu, who strongly supported the NLD and Ms. Suu Kyi are being brutally tortured by the terrorist junta council.
