TANINTHARYI DIVISION – In Kanpauk Region of Yebyu Township where the junta council has banned motorcycles, locals reported that junta forces abducted four residents from their homes in night raids.
The four were Mr. Thar Gyi and Ms. Tin Tin Wai, a couple in their 50s from Mi Gyaung Ai Ward; Ms. Than Than Soe from Hlegon Ward; and Ms. Thae Su Moe (38) from Maggin Ward.
It is said that two junta vehicles came to their respective houses at around midnight on December 17 and took them away.
These arrests follow the drone attacks on the junta Mawyawaddy Naval Base by Kanpauk Region People’s Defence Force (Dawna Company 4) that happened earlier this week. A local resident believes that the junta council is abducting the civilians because their base was attacked.
The occupations of the abducted civilians range from a truck driver to grocer and market stall owner, according to residents.
It is said that their mobile phones were confiscated as well at the time of their arrests.
Although there is no information on where the four are being detained at, locals guessed that they could be detained at the Mawyawaddy Naval Base.
A person in charge of a truck terminal in Mawlamyaing that is frequented by truck drivers from Kanpauk was also reportedly detained and interrogated by related junta troops following the investigation of Mr. Thar Gyi’s mobile phone. Although he was released later, his mobile phone was confiscated, said an acquaintance.
According to local residents, the junta council troops had checked the faces of the people at a funeral and crowded places in Kanpauk as well as conducted patrols on the evening before they made the arrests.
The junta forces had similarly detained two men operating a motorcycle workshop in Kanpauk during the last week of November. One of them was released but another one is still under detention.
