BAGO DIVISION – In Kyaukyi Township, near Naung Kone Village, there had been clashes between the military council and local defence forces. The junta army stormed into the village and burned down almost the entire village, reported the residents.
On July 18, at around 5:00 a.m., a hundred-strong force of junta soldiers from Natthankwin Town launched an offensive and after the shootout near Naungkone Village, they entered the village and burned it down.
“Naungkone Village was raided and torched by the junta forces. Almost the entire village was burnt down. The junta column surrounded the village and the local defence forces resisted them. But the resistance forces were outnumbered and thus withdrawn a little distance when the junta forces were able to enter the village. The junta troops burned down the village soon after they entered and still have not left yet,” said a local.
It was reported that junta troops entered the village while firing heavy weapons and then set fire to the houses. Almost the entire village was destroyed but the exact damages could not be confirmed as the soldiers haven’t left the village yet.
Naungkone Village is located alongside the road connecting Natthankwin and Kyaukyi Towns and has a population of more than 4,000 people.
On the morning of July 16, due to junta troops shooting at motorcyclists on the Kyaukyi-Natthankwin Road, two were reportedly killed and two others were injured.
