MYANMAR – As the fuel shortage situation worsens, the trucks running between Mawlamyaing and Yangon are facing difficulties as they are unable to purchase fuel.
Large numbers of trucks were reportedly queuing at gas stations to refuel on December 8.
Starting December 1, all townships in the country, even including the economic capital Yangon, are facing fuel shortages and as the trucks have to queue up to refuel, there have been delays to the flow of commodities.
“Trucks were in queue at the Denko and Max gas stations in Mottama since night to head from Mawlamyaing to Yangon. The queue is still there this morning (December 8). Even when the gas stations shut down when they ran out of fuel, cars remain in queue to refuel once it’s available,” said a truck driver.
Gas stations have ran out of Octane 92 and 95 while only a limited amount of diesel is available, causing difficulties for trucks.
Most gas stations on the Yangon-Mawlamyaing Highway are closed after running out of fuel while the ones that are still open only sell limited amounts, disrupting the transportation.
Fuel is unavailable in most gas stations in Mon State including Mawlamyaing, Paung, Thaton, Kyaikkaw, Bilin and Kyaikhto and people have to queue for hours at the gas stations where there is still gas available.
“Even in Mawlamyaing, thousands of motorcycles are in queue at the gas stations that are still open. The queue is formed already in the morning even though the gas station is not open yet. Those who can’t queue have to purchase fuel in bottles, one litre bottles can cost up to 3,500-4,000 Kyats,” shared a Mawlamyaing resident.
