MYANMAR – The military council increased the minimum wage of private workers by 1,000 kyats per day to 5,800 kyats per day as announced on October 5th.
In March 2018, the National Committee on Minimum Wage determined that the minimum wage per day is set at 4,800 kyats. Since the military coup d’état, the junta council has allowed its subordinate employees to allow an additional allowance of 1,000 kyats per day starting from September 30, 2023 and private employees will also be paid the same rate.
He said the salary has been set at 5,800 kyats since October 1st for one day (for 8 hours) on the daily wages workers. There were requests to increase the minimum wage by 10,000 kyats per day (three hundred thousand kyats per month), but the coup military council only gave an increase of 1,000 kyats under the heading of additional support.
“It’s long overdue. 1,000 a day is not a fine amount when the price of goods has risen 3 times than before. It’s not a satisfactory amount,” he said.
The minimum wage was raised from 3,600 kyats per day in 2015. In 2018, the rate of 4800 was fixed. It was said that the minimum wage must be revised every two years, but due to the covid epidemic in 2020 and the military coup in 2021, the wage could not be revised.
