YANGON DIVISION – The junta council has been pressuring civilians who possess ID cards to obtain smart cards, with the aim of exerting control.
In Kawmhu Township, Southern District, Yangon, junta members pressured individuals to obtain smart cards on August 24 (Thursday). Those who possess ID cards must acquire smart cards; otherwise, they will face consequences. The smart cards are meant to serve as reliable evidence in case someone travels abroad. The issuance of smart cards is scheduled only for August 24 for Kawmhu Residents.
“We must take the original ID card, a copy of the ID card, and a household list to the Sanchaung Immigration Office to obtain the smart card. At the office, we need to fill out a form. The other 18 Sanchaung Residential Wards will need to take turns making smart cards on different days. If someone misses their designated day, they can apply again after all 18 wards have been served. You need to inquire about your turn at the administrative office,” said a resident from Sanchaung.
The junta council has ordered non-CDM staff, junta administrative staff’s family members, schools, and vendors to obtain smart cards. The public perceives this as an attempt by the junta council to intimidate civilians through various means.
