MYANMAR – The terrorist junta council has detained the wives of six brigadier generals from Laukkaing who were sentenced to death or life imprisonment and blocked their families from contacting them, according to sources close to the families of those brigadier generals.
Laukkaing Region Administration Team Chairman Brigadier General Tun Tun Myint, Laukkaing Regional Operations Command Commander Brigadier General Moe Kyaw Thu, Division 55 Commander Brigadier General Zaw Myo Win, Military Operations Command 16 Commander Brigadier General Thaw Zin Oo, Military Operations Command 12 Commander Brigadier General Aung Zaw Lin and Military Operations Command 14 Commander Brigadier General Aye Min Oo who surrendered to the Myanmar National Democratic Alliance Army (MNDAA) were charged for failing to fulfil their duties, insubordination and insurgency, followed by their wives also being detained by the junta council.
“Not only the six Brigadier Generals who surrendered in Laukkaing were arrested but their wives were detained as well. Usually, when the husband is arrested, the wife is summoned for questioning and to inspect their estate. But now, it has been over one month since the husbands have been sentenced, yet the wives are still not released. Those brigadier generals have young children except for one. Even their children are not allowed to contact them. Moreover, the wife of Division 101 commander is also detained,” explained a source close to the families of the brigadier generals.
The junta martial court sentenced Brigadier General Tun Tun Myint, Brigadier General Moe Kyaw Thu and Brigadier General Zaw Myo Win who surrendered to MNDAA in Laukkaing of northern Shan State to death in January.
A martial tribunal was formed on January 13 with Deputy Division Commander of the North Eastern Command, Brigadier General Kyaw Kyaw Tun as the chairman then investigated and sentenced the case within 48 hours.
The death sentences and 20 years imprisonment (life sentence) were said to have been delivered by the martial tribunal according to section 32(a) of the military act.
Section 32(a) of the 1959 military act states that anyone who has to follow the stipulations of the act shall be sentenced to death or a reduced sentence as stipulated by this act when it is evident in the martial court that he shamefully abandoned or surrendered a battalion, fortress, stationed place, place, water vehicle or a sentry that was deferred to him or that he has the duty to protect; or that he threatened, persuaded or used any other manner on a commander or anyone to commit one of those acts.
The junta martial court delivered death sentences to Laukkaing Region Administration Team Chairman Brigadier General Tun Tun Myint, Laukkaing Regional Operations Command Commander Brigadier General Moe Kyaw Thu and Division 55 Commander Brigadier General Zaw Myo Win considered to be the main culprits behind the case of over 4,000 junta soldiers and families surrendering to MNDAA in Laukkaing on January 4 under multiple sections of the military act including sedition, insubordination and failure to fulfil duty.
In addition, the remaining three brigadier generals, Military Operations Command 16 Commander Brigadier General Thaw Zin Oo, Military Operations Command 12 Commander Brigadier General Aung Zaw Lin and Military Operations Command 14 Commander Brigadier General Aye Min Oo were given life sentences for not fulfilling their duties, insubordination and insurgency while six colonel ranked officers from Laukkaing were also sentenced to 20 years imprisonment at the martial court.
