MYANMAR – It is reported that the military officers who do not want to go to the battlefronts have been paying hundreds of lakhs of kyats in bribes, depending on the region (Warzones).
After the military coup, the military officers give various excuses to avoid going to the front lines, as well as give bribes to respective authorities.
“It’s like a (bribe) market with prices depending on the battle front. The young officers who can’t pay tens of millions of kyats had to go into battle fields led by newly graduated captains,” stated a military source to the media.
To avoid going to war zones of Sagaing and Magway Divisions, one has to pay eight to ten million kyats. If they want to avoid the battlegrounds where the ethnic armed resistance groups are, they have to pay more than twenty million in bribes. The bribes could only be guaranteed for a transfer season and not for the successive duty rotations.
It is reported that even the battalion commanders, the high-ranked officers, are dying at the front line and thus some officers have been spending all their possessions on bribery.
The junta council which has opened war fronts in all areas, is facing defeat; resulting in a large number of casualties including high-ranked officers. Thus, fellow officers are lately refusing to fight in the battles and defecting, in addition to bribing the authorities to avoid going to battle fronts.
