SAGAING DIVISION – A Chin ethnic woman around 30 years old, who was beaten up by junta council troops in Kalay on August 27 under alleged security reasons, was reported to have passed away from the sustained wounds on September 5 evening.
Ms. Do Deik Hwae and a friend from Pyitawtar Village were visiting Kalay City when junta troops confiscated their motorcycle, mobile phones and wallets and beat up Ms. Do Deik Hwae then ordered them to come and collect the motorcycle and mobile phones with a ransom of 50,000 Kyats the next day.
“She was beaten quite horribly. They were ordered to bring 50,000 Kyats to collect the motorcycle and phones the next day. Then the next morning when she was set to go collect the items, she started experiencing headaches during breakfast and started bleeding from the ears and was hospitalised,” explained a resident.
However, she didn’t show any sign of improvement while at Kalay Hospital and was transferred to Mandalay but succumbed to her injuries on the way there on September 5 evening.
Locals reported that junta forces had also extorted two women visiting Tarhan Ward from Kalay on August 27, using the fact that they didn’t have a motorcycle license.
“It was just on the Bogyoke Road. There were both (junta) soldiers and police. They demanded five lakhs, for not having a motorcycle license and asked for immediate payment, handcuffing the two. The two women were released only after they offered them three lakhs they had on them,” detailed the resident.
Junta forces have been extorting passing civilians in Kalay since the middle of 2022, a year after the military coup and locals said that there are also junta-backed Pyu Saw Htee militants involved.
