MYANMAR – Former U.S. Congressman Tom Andrews, the United Nations Special Rapporteur to Myanmar, urged the U.S. government to further block the oil and natural gas sector, the main pillar of the military council, as a more effective additional measure.
Tom Andrews, in a meeting with US House of Representatives, Human Rights Commissioner Tom Lantos, said that while the US government is providing humanitarian aid to refugees in Myanmar and abroad, on the other hand, it is necessary to sanction oil and natural gas industries that are the main source of income for the military council, which is causing harm to the people.
“I congratulate the US for sanctioning the Myanmar Foreign Trade Bank and the Myanmar Investment and Commercial Bank in June. However, the United States and the European Union need to impose additional sanctions on Myanmar’s oil and natural gas industry, which is the main source of foreign income for the Military Council. Reducing their income means reducing their cruelty. The Washington government should work with other countries to prevent weapons from going to the war council,” Tom Andrews urged.
