ASEAN – Singapore criticized Thailand for inviting the foreign minister of Myanmar coup council to the dialogue on Myanmar issues that will be held with the lead of the Thailand military regime. Mr. Vivian Balakrishnan, the minister of foreign affairs of Singapore, mentioned that it was too early to invite the foreign minister of Myanmar coup council to the ASEAN summit level and the foreign minister-level meetings.
On June 16, the minister of foreign affairs of Singapore mentioned those words after speaking in a joint conference with United States secretary of state Anthony Blinken.
Mr. Vivian Balakrishnan mentioned that “We haven’t seen any obvious improvement regarding 5 point consensus. For ASEAN, it would be premature to re-engage with the junta at ASEAN summit level or the foreign minister level. The leaders of Singapore already corroborated this stance at the ASEAN summit. The chairman of ASEAN, Indonesia is discussing with the people who have concerned.”
He continued that the key point to solve Myanmar’s issues is that all stakeholders need to intimately sit down and negotiate through dialogue although it is hard to say how long it will take. Last time, it took 25 years for the democratic transition to occur in Myanmar. He said he hope this time won’t take that long.
US secretary of state mentioned that US government will continue to impose restrictions and to sustain the appropriate pressure on the junta council. He also said that they support and welcome the economic pressure of Singapore on Myanmar.
