MYANMAR- The military council reportedly arrested more than 100 entrepreneurs, businessmen, directors, and supervisors in the economic sector including General Yan Naung Soe, secretary of the military council’s foreign exchange committee.
General Yan Naung Soe, secretary of foreign exchange committee, the Director of Consumer Affairs, and five junta secretaries of rice, corn, palm oil, petroleum, and banking sectors are included among the detainees.
“They are arrested for the issue of dollar exchange and commodities permit issues. I heard that the issues of palm oil businessmen are exposed during the interrogations,” said a businessman.
The Junta council has restricted import licenses since the coup and General Yan Naung Soe has the authority to endorse import licenses and those who were allowed to buy dollars at the price set by central bank.
General Yan Naung Soe has also taken the position of Secretary of the Central Committee of Trading (established by the Military Council for rapid commodities flow and trade). He was arrested by the military council on September 8, as reported by some businessmen.
Among those arrested were corn and rice exporters, palm oil and Fuel importers, Currency Exchange businessmen, Banking businessmen, and gold and jewellery entrepreneurs. According to the banking community, the officials from the top three banks that play in the dollar market were also being arrested.
On August 19, General Yan Naung Soe reportedly threatened the exporters to be charged with laws of discrediting the state, committing financial fraud, and market playing of foreign currency exchange and sentenced to 35 years of imprisonment if they did not bring back the export revenue dollars to the country.
