MYANMAR – 397 NGOs including the Myanmar Political Prisoners Network (MPPN) sent an open letter to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) on March 1, urging the UNSC to take swift action as the forces conscription of the junta council could harm the peace, stability and human safety in Myanmar and ASEAN.
In the letter, the NGOs asked Japan who will take over the role of the UNSC chair in March 2024 to impose economic sanctions on the junta council and to prohibit the sales of arms to the junta regime, to transfer the Myanmar crisis to the International Criminal Court (ICC) or set up an emergency tribunal, and to swiftly arrange legal protection programs for the Myanmar citizens who flee into the neighbouring countries to escape from the crimes and forced conscription of the junta council.
Mr. Thaik Tun Thet, a leading executive committee member of MPPN, a signatory of the open letter, explained that they partook in the open letter in order to prevent against those actions (crimes and forced conscription) of the junta council as although it is now over three years since the military council’s attempt to seize the power of the people in Myanmar, the United Nations as well as the regional ASEAN nations have not imposed effective sanctions on the junta council and so long as there is no such action, the junta council would be able to continue doing those without restraint.
The open letter was ended by mentioning that there can be no peace and stability in the region so long as there is no peace and stability in Myanmar and that the illegitimate Myanmar junta council, an international criminal organisation, must be held responsible for the decades of brutal crimes that include genocide and crimes against humanity.
