KACHIN STATE – The Kachin Independence Army (KIA) community reported that opium fields near Narpho Camp of the junta council near Laiza were destroyed according to the anti drug program of the KIA.
“The opium fields planted by Chinese businessmen near Narpho Camp of the junta council were destroyed on April 5,” said a KIA source. However he is unclear how many acres of opium fields were destroyed but confirmed that the fields belonged to Chinese businessmen and that the fields have been there for a considerably long time.
A local resident shared that the junta police force was also involved in the sale of opium. “The junta police would make the Chinese sell their opium then pretend to arrest those dealers. The thing is it wasn’t fitting for the police to go collect the money from the sale of opium themselves. So they pretend to arrest the dealers and ask to bail them out with the money earned from the sale of opium. The junta council acts like that everywhere,” explained the resident.
KIA Brigade 3 has captured the opium mules of the battalion commander from Narpho Camp around two years ago.
