BAGO DIVISION – Locals reported that 4 local residents were killed and 16 others were injured when a shell fired by the Junta Council hit YayPhyukan village, bordering Shwegyin (Sawhti) township and Nyaung Lay Pin township.
At around 11:30 a.m. on January 5th, the 20th Light Infantry Battalion based in Nyaung Lay Pin fired 3 shells of heavy weapons towards the villages, and one of them exploded on a house where a funeral was held in YayPhyukan village.
“While they were cooking for the funeral, the weapon directly hit on the house. People around the funeral were injured, including children,” a resident of Nyaung Lay Pin told the media.
Ma Sanpo, 55, U Nyun Tin, 62, Ko Hein, 16 and Ma Aye Ma, 35, from YayPhyukan Village died of injuries and 8 women, 1 child and 7 men, total 16 people were injured.
Among the injured, at least 7 are in critical condition and have been sent to nearby clinics and Nyaung Lay Pin Hospital for treatment.
The Junta Council Army, based in Nyaung Lay Pin, also fired five 120-mm mortar shells into Wine Thit Hsate village on January 4th, according to KNU.
