THAILAND – Thailand Lawyers for Human Rights Center (TLHR) stated that the Thailand criminal court, on August 21, sentenced seven people who protested the Myanmar junta’s military coup in front of the Myanmar Embassy in Thailand on February 1, 2021.
All seven were reportedly sentenced to prison sentences and fines respectively for violating the emergency order and disrupting the authority.
On the day of the military coup, members of the Thai-Myanmar Students Union and citizens of the two countries protested in front of the Myanmar Embassy to Thailand and also marched on the Pathum Wan skywalk but were broken up by Thai police force using shields and batons. Three protesters, a member of We Volunteer, a student of Thammasat University and a Myanmar national were detained on that day.
The Thammasat University student was sentenced to 12 months in prison commuted to four months and 20 days. A second person was sentenced to 37 months in prison and a fine of 40,000 Bahts, commuted to a sentence of 1 year, 6 months and 15 days imprisonment and 20,000 Bahts fine while the rest were sentenced to four years imprisonment and 60,000 Bahts fine each, also commuted to 2 years and 50 days imprisonment and 30,000 Bahts fine.
TLHR also mentioned that the university student received bail after paying bail of 150,000 Bahts and the rest also had their sentences suspended.
