MYANMAR – Major General Myat Thet Oo, the junta council’s South East Military Command Commander overseeing the operations in Karen and Mon States, was retired from his position and sent to Laos as a diplomat.
His appointment as a diplomat was announced in the junta regime’s papers on June 16.
Major General Myat Thet Oo, previously the commander for the Northern Military Command, was made the South East Military Command Commander just last August.
He was said to be removed from his position just after seven months and there were rumours at that time that he was being subjected to interrogation. The junta council had made no comments on his position then.
Then, two months later on June 16, the junta regime announced his new position as the official diplomat to Laos.
Some observed that the junta council sent the former military command commander as a diplomat to Laos in preparation for when Laos would be elected the ASEAN chair in 2024.
Meanwhile, there are also some who are of the opinion that the major general was relegated to the position of diplomat after performing poorly in the south east military region where junta troops suffered loss after loss against the forces of Karen National Union (KNU) and People’s Defence Force (PDF).
