RAKHINE STATE-One of the residents from Minn Gha quarter 9 said, most of the wards in Sittwe desperately need purified water, and people have to drink raw water from the artesian wells without boiling.
“We don’t have purified drinking water. The regular water trucks do not come. Although we see there’s water distribution in front of the military council office, it’s not convenient for people in faraway destinations. So, we just boil and drink water from the artesian wells in compounds”.
She also said that the total of 17 Min Gan quarters, Shwe Byar quarters, and Sat Yon quarters mainly require drinking water and food; however, they have not received any assistance until now. She also added,
“As I have observed throughout the city, a total of 17 quarters of Min Gan do not have access to drinking water or any other assistance. We avoided the storm on May 13 and came back on May 15. We could not find our own house. Nearly the whole city has been destroyed, and the rice left at home got wet. We borrow some rice from others. We know that a bag of rice costs 150,000 MMK. We cannot afford to buy it because it already costs approximately 1,000,000 MMK for our family for the avoidance of a storm”.
Some people drink water without boiling it, which has led to diarrhea. There is no drinking water to buy.
“We cannot buy purified drinking water. So most people just drink raw water. People with low levels of knowledge drink raw water. As we do not have access to the internet, awareness regarding boiling water is not present. We know that some children in Min Gan quarters got diarrhea. A child’s mother said her daughter got diarrhea.”
The Internet is only accessible in areas near the military council office. It is stated that the military council will support 7,000,000,000 MMK while the NUG government will contribute USD 1,000,000, respectively.
