TANINTHARYI DIVISION – Locals reported that the junta council distributed propaganda sheets saying there is no need to worry about the conscription law in Kan Pauk Village Tract.
It is said that the propaganda sheets were distributed at the crowded places in the village tract such as the front of Kan Pauk Market, general goods stores and bars on February 19 morning and evening.
Junta police from the regional police station, soldiers and junta appointed village administrators were reportedly working together to distribute those sheets.
“I didn’t take it. I just turned my motorcycle back and returned home when I saw them (junta forces distributing the propaganda sheets). As I was alone, I was scared that I might have been abducted,” a 20 year old local woman shared her experience near Kan Pauk Market.
There are 11 wards in Kan Pauk Village Tract and it is said that the propaganda sheets were distributed in majority of the wards.
The distributed sheets, titled information regarding the conscription law, lists out the aim of the law, the eligible age range, period and exemptions for military service.
A section titled, there’s no need to worry, mentions that the conscription won’t be immediate but only after writing out the procedure and also described those who can apply for a temporary exemption.
In addition, it also warned not to fall for the calls to join the People’s Defence Force (PDF).
Similar propaganda sheets were said to have been distributed in Monywa, Sagaing Division while the junta council is reported to have held events explaining the conscription law in Kyaukpadaung Township, Mandalay Division.
After the junta chief enforced the conscription law on February 10, there have been rising concerns among the young people who have turned 18.
