SHAN STATE – The sellers from the shops opening at night in Taunggyi Town, Shan State stated that they have been enduring difficulties due to less shoppers after conscription order.
Subsequently, shops’ sales which had over 1 million MMK before dropped to around 0.2 million MMK and some of the shops are said to be shut down since uneconomical to run further.
“We have opened the restaurant in downtown daytime and sold bbq at night here (night market near No. 3 high school). We have considered to discontinue as become uneconomical. We have lost a lot meanwhile trying to adapt the situation. There is no one shopping here even before 8 p.m.,” a shop owner selling at night market near No. 3 high school said.
Though the night markets near the city’s market and No. 3 high school, Taunggyi Town had been crowded with domestic travelers and visitors before, only one-third of the locals have visited recently.

Bars have been preferred by youths but regular customers for restaurants like ours usually come with family. Since elders are more worried upon rumors of forcefully drafting porters for the junta’s military,” a Moo Kra Ta Hotpot Restaurant owner, opening in Taunggyi downtown elaborated.
