THAILAND – A Thailand opposition MP urged to accept the Myanmar refugees who fled into Thailand to escape conscription and suggested that they are given employment rights.
MP Kannavee Suebsang of FAIR Party said this after Thailand Prime Minister Srettha Thavisin spoke about taking legal action on Myanmar nationals who illegally crossed into Thailand for various reasons including to flee conscription.
MP Kannavee commented that the Myanmar coup council has temporarily put a stop to sending workers into Thailand after both sides reached an agreement, that around 700-800 Myanmar people have crossed the border to work in Thailand, and that even though it is unclear how the pause on sending workers is related to the political situation in Myanmar, it is concerning for the Thai government to forcibly send back those who have already arrived in Thailand.
He continued that the mass migration of Myanmar nationals into Thailand is more to escape from death than to break legal laws, that they escaped from the choice between being sent to the battlefield to be killed or kill someone else.
He suggested that at a time when the import of workers is paused, by creating job opportunities for the illegal refugees who fled from conscription, it could be a benefit from the humanitarian viewpoint and would also solve the labour shortage.
At present, a large number of young people wishing to evade conscription are preparing to cross into neighbouring Thailand and the Thai Immigration officials reported that Myanmar youths illegally crossing the border are being captured daily.
The Myanmar junta council, suffering loss after loss in the battlefields, announced the enactment of conscription law by which they plan to target and forcibly conscript young people on February 10.
