MYANMAR – The National League for Democracy (NLD) announced on August 9 that the party has expelled Mr. Henry Van Thio who has joined the junta council that has been terrorizing, torturing, abducting, and murdering civilians.
Mr. Henry Van Thio was Vice President from 2016 to 2021. The party’s statement said that he was expelled after he was found attending the junta council’s national defence and security council meeting on July 31, 2023.
NLD called for a central executive committee meeting on August 8 and voted for the expulsion of Mr. Henry Van Thio.
Nine central executive committee members of the NLD, including the chair and vice chair, have been arbitrarily detained for opposing the junta regime, and many party members have also been unjustly imprisoned.
NLD also announced that another Central Executive Committee member, Mr. Nyan Win, had passed away while imprisoned due to not receiving sufficient medical treatment.
