YANGON DIVISION- Locals reported that junta troops raided Wailuwon (North) Quarter, Sanchaung Township on Wednesday evening (May 24), opening fire and detaining about nine youths.
“Around 10 p.m., four junta vehicles came in and opened fire as the youths tried to run away, and then the youths were detained,” stated the eyewitness.
The reasons for the arrest and whereabouts of the youths are still unknown.
During the arrest, the junta troops searched and called out some youths by names, some detained youths were reportedly beaten before they were taken away, as reported by locals.
The junta troops reportedly raided U Shwe Hman street, Aung Thapyay street, Gantkaw street and a restaurant at Gantkaw Street, Wailuwon (North) Quarter, and arrested the youths inside, stated another witness.
“Not only that place but four places were also raided on the same day. The junta troops shouted not to look at them or they would shoot before they open fire. I saw that incident as I peeked from my window,” said the witness.
The families of the detained youths are concerned about their safety as they have no idea where they were taken to.
Since the coup in February 2021 until May 24, according to the statement made by Assistance Association for Political Prisoners (AAPP), 22,683 were arrested and 18,364 are still detained and 6,076 people were sentenced to imprisonment.
